Washington, D.C. – Ahead of the President’s Joint Address tonight, there are a few key lies Trump, Musk, and Congressional Republicans keep repeating that are worth keeping an eye out for. Here are some facts about Republicans’ billionaire-first agenda that no amount of spin or lies during the Joint Address will change:
FACT: The vast majority of the benefits from Republicans’ tax plan would go to billionaires and wealthy corporations
- The Republican Budget would hand out nearly $5 trillion in tax cuts, most of which go to the richest 5%.
- The average tax cut for someone in the top 0.1% would be at least $340,000 a year.
FACT: Costs will go up for most middle class families if Republicans’ plan passes
- Health insurance costs will skyrocket for more than 25 million middle-class families, as their proposal allows critical tax credits for health insurance to expire.
- Housing costs will become even more unaffordable. Republicans’ plan will cause interest rates to rise, leading to reduced housing investment and higher rent and home prices.
- College tuition costs will increase. Republicans’ proposal will increase taxes for students receiving scholarships, while eliminating key tax credits, grants, and deductions that currently reduce the cost of tuition.
FACT: Republicans’ budget proposals would slash Medicaid and kick millions of Americans off their health insurance
- The Republican budget proposal would cut more than $800 billion from Medicaid.
- These cuts would threaten coverage for more than 72 million Americans.
- It is impossible to cut $880 billion, as they propose, without gutting Medicaid. Republicans themselves have raised concerns about the severity of the Medicaid cuts required by their plan.
FACT: Republicans’ budget proposals would slash nutrition assistance for tens of millions of Americans
- The Republican plan forces over $200 billion in cuts to the Agriculture Committee, which can only be achieved by slashing SNAP benefits and other nutrition assistance programs.
- Cuts to SNAP and nutrition assistance programs could impact the 1.2 million veterans, 4.8 million seniors, and 14.6 million children who rely on these vital programs.
- 12 million children risk losing access to school breakfasts and lunch under the Republican plan.
FACT: The Trump-Musk administration is already cutting important funding for Social Security to help pay for their tax breaks for billionaires
- Social Security services are already being disrupted after Elon Musk – who recently called Social Security a “ponzi scheme” – started closing Social Security offices nationwide.
- Musk’s DOGE is trying to take support away from America’s seniors by eliminating HALF of the staff responsible for keeping Social Security running.
- Republicans, including the Speaker of the House, have admitted that the money DOGE steals from programs like Social Security will be used to fund their billionaire-first tax plan.
