Republicans in the Hot Seat Over “Dystopian” Billionaire-First Tax Agenda

Washington, D.C. – Republicans thought they could hide from their constituents and lie about their tax plans to get away with betraying working families. This recess, the American people are proving them wrong, again. Thousands have joined rallies, town halls, protests, and more to speak out against Republicans’ billionaire-first tax agenda which guts vital services like health care and Social Security to give massive tax breaks to the rich.

Here’s just some of the local coverage highlighting the unprecedented public outrage we’re seeing this recess:

Local TV Coverage

Phoenix, Arizona: “This is not a massive hospital, but it serves a big purpose. 3300 square miles of central and western Arizona is covered by the Wickenburg community hospital. […] If the White House decides to keep cutting programs like Medicare for seniors or Medicaid for lower income families, hospitals like this could close.”

Little Rock, Arkansas: “The federal budget plan calls for the House committee that oversees Medicaid to cut no less than $880 billion by 2034.” […] “We’re furious at our Senators and our Representative in DC. Why could you do this? Over 27% of Arkansans need Medicaid.”

Santa Clara, California: “Rally attendees said the only way to prevent a possible catastrophe is for those impacted and those on the periphery to speak up, push back, and save Medicaid from funding cuts.

Springfield, Illinois: “Residents in Jacksonville rallied yesterday asking Representative Mary Miller to oppose cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other social services. They say under the current Congressional budget there are 190,000 Illinoisans in her district at risk of losing coverage.”

Bowling Green, Kentucky: More than 1.4 million Kentuckians are enrolled in Medicaid. Lindgren says if funding is severely cut, hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians from seniors to children to those with disabilities will face devastation.”

Bangor, Maine: “Tuesday was Tax Day and Mainers are calling on their elected officials to put families first. […] Organizers say those policies give billions to corporations and the rich, while hurting everyday Mainers, leaving working people behind.”

Detroit, Michigan: “Medicaid is a vital resource for 2.6 million Michigan residents, including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. A proposed budget resolution could significantly cut Medicaid funding, prompting healthcare professionals and officials like Dr. Dan Carey and U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell to speak out against the cuts, citing potential harm to vulnerable populations and healthcare systems.”

Omaha, Nebraska: “Other issues raised included the administration’s plan to cut SNAP and Medicaid benefits, and the federal funding freeze. Most of the crowd was upset that Bacon didn’t show up to answer questions from his district 2 constituents.”

Elmira, New York: “Community members along with people from Citizen Action of New York gathered outside of Congressman Nick Langworthy’s office and voiced their opposition to proposed federal tax changes. Organizers said the changes would harm working-class Americans while benefitting the wealthiest few.”

Toledo, Ohio: “Dozens of people came out to a citizen-led town hall in Bowling Green this weekend criticizing Bob Latta…they invited the Congressman but his office said he wasn’t entertaining the request.”

Charleston, West Virginia: “Community leaders spoke out on how possible cuts to different federal services could really impact the state. […] a budget reconciliation that cuts federal funding to Medicaid is not actually going to reduce the cost or the expenses of taking care of these children. It’s going to shift it to the hospitals and the clinics and the parents.”

Eau Claire, Wisconsin: “In downtown Eau Claire, area advocates gathered outside the federal courthouse Tuesday afternoon, urging Republican Derrick Van Orden to not cut federal programs.”
