Washington, D.C. – This Mother’s Day, Trump, Musk, and Republicans in Congress are gutting essential services for families and undermining health care for women in order to give trillions in tax breaks to their billionaire donors. While we all celebrate the incredible mothers in our lives this weekend, here’s a reminder of the many ways Republicans are trying to make life harder for them:
The Trump-Musk administration is undermining the health and well-being of moms and their kids to pay for billionaire tax breaks:
- Slashing programs to reduce maternal mortality and provide mental health support for pregnant and postpartum women in crisis.
- Shutting down child care centers across the country.
- Eliminating access to cancer screening and birth control for millions of Americans by gutting funding for Planned Parenthood.
- Pulling funding for research to protect pregnant women from domestic violence.
- Cutting research into ensuring the safety of baby formula.
- Gutting research into IVF, and other fertility treatments.
- Closing nearly half a dozen Head Start offices, threatening early childhood development and education services for hundreds of thousands of families.
- Cancelled $1 billion in funds for school lunches, meaning that millions of children could go without needed meals.
As moms and families across America struggle to make ends meet, Trump and Republicans’ Billionaire Tax Scam will raise costs on working families:
- Health care costs will skyrocket and millions will lose their insurance:
- More than 20 million Americans will see their premiums go up – by an average of $700 per year – by failing to extend ACA tax credits.
- More than 10 million Americans risk losing health coverage from Medicaid cuts.
- Reminder: Medicaid covers 4 in 10 births in the U.S. and 18 million women rely on Medicaid for access to basic health care.
- Food costs will go up and children will go hungry:
- Grocery costs will go up by over $500 per year for 40 million people.
- Food assistance will be jeopardized for 1.2 million veterans, 4.8 million seniors, and 14.6 million children.
- Housing and education will get even more expensive:
- The cost of buying a new house will go up by $600 annually for the typical new mortgage payment.
- College will get more expensive for millions of students and families who rely on Pell Grants – about one third of all undergraduate students.
- Student loans will get more expensive as Republicans remove protections and increase costs for the 42 million Americans with student loan debt.
