House Republicans Relying on Secret Negotiations and Late Night Votes to Hide Their Unpopular Billionaire Tax Scam from the American People

Washington, D.C. – Republicans are relying on midnight votes and secret negotiations to advance their Billionaire Tax Scam because they know it’s wildly unpopular to cut essential programs like health care and food assistance in order to give massive tax breaks to billionaires. House Republicans can push their bill through the House at breakneck speed and hold as many dead-of-night votes as they want, but the American people aren’t falling for their pathetic efforts to hide the truth about their billionaire-first agenda.

Reminder, no one supports giving more tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy at the expense of working families – and there’s plenty of polling that proves it:

  • Only 14% of Americans support reducing spending on essential services, such as education, health care, and food for the poor, so Congress can extend Trump’s tax cuts.
  • Most Americans (58%) would rather raise taxes on corporations and high-income families to keep spending and pay down the deficit.
  • Trump’s own pollster found that a majority of Americans who voted for Donald Trump oppose cutting Medicaid funding.
  • 60% of voters would be less likely to vote for a member of Congress who supports tax cuts for the wealthy, including 33% of Trump voters.
  • Overwhelming majorities of Americans oppose cuts to critical programs including Social Security (85%), Medicaid (82%), Medicare (85%), food assistance (76%), and K-12 education (77%). That opposition extends across party lines, with over 60% of Trump voters opposing cuts to all the programs listed above.
