Washington, D.C. – House Republicans just passed their Billionaire Tax Scam, which would rip health care and food assistance from millions of the most vulnerable Americans – all to pay for billionaire tax breaks. Now, it’s the Senate’s turn to decide whether they’re going to deliver for hard-working Americans who need relief, or throw their constituents under the bus.
While this cruel legislation would hurt states nationwide, here are just a few examples for Senate Republicans on the extreme harms their constituents would face:
Alaska
- 21,000 people will lose health insurance, 3% of the state’s population.
- 14,000 people, including 8,000 children, risk losing basic food assistance.
- 6% of Alaska’s rural hospitals risk shutting down due to funding cuts.
North Carolina
- 260,000 people will lose their health insurance, 2% of the state’s population.
- 317,000 people, including 190,000 children, risk losing basic food assistance.
- 12% of North Carolina’s rural hospitals risk shutting down due to funding cuts.
Maine
- 38,000 people will lose their health insurance, 3% of the state’s population.
- 27,000 people, including 15,000 children, risk losing basic food assistance.
- 17% of Maine’s rural hospitals risk shutting down due to funding cuts.
Missouri
- 110,000 people will lose their health insurance, 2% of the state’s population.
- 132,000 people, including 78,000 children, risk losing basic food assistance.
- 16% of Missouri’s rural hospitals risk shutting down due to funding cuts.
Ohio
- 270,000 people will lose their health insurance, 2% of the state’s population.
- 263,000 people, including 161,000 children, risk losing basic food assistance.
- 6% of Ohio’s rural hospitals risk shutting down due to funding cuts.
Iowa
- 56,000 people will lose their health insurance, 2% of the state’s population.
- 47,000 people, including 28,000 children, would risk losing basic food assistance.
- Iowa will lose 25% of its state Medicaid funding per resident.
Mississippi
- 47,000 people will lose their health insurance, 2% of the state’s population.
- 91,000 people, including 56,000 children, risk losing basic food assistance.
- Mississippi will lose 19% of its state Medicaid funding per resident.
South Carolina
- 66,000 people will lose their health insurance, 1% of the state’s population.
- 121,000 people, including 77,000 children, risk losing basic food assistance.
- Over 32,000 jobs would be lost due to cuts to clean energy tax credits.
South Dakota
- 9,200 people will lose their health insurance, 1% of the state’s population.
- 13,000 people, including 8,000 children, risk losing basic food assistance.
- 6% of South Dakota’s rural hospitals risk shutting down due to funding cuts.
