NEW NC POLL: Warning Signs for Senator Tillis and Senate Republicans Ahead of Vote on Massively Unpopular Billionaire Tax Scam

Washington, D.C. – Today, Families Over Billionaires released new statewide polling from North Carolina, conducted by Data for Progress, showing that a majority of voters oppose Republicans’ Billionaire Tax Scam, which would make deep cuts to Medicaid and food assistance in order to pay for tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. 

This poll is just the latest of many recent polls confirming that Republicans’ harmful legislation is deeply unpopular across the country, and only gets more unpopular as people learn about it. The poll was conducted in North Carolina from June 4-8. Full poll memo from Data for Progress can be found here.

North Carolina voters oppose key components of the Republican bill and don’t think Republicans’ budget bill benefits them.

  • A majority of North Carolina voters oppose cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (63%), cuts to nutrition assistance (63%), and increasing the deficit (65%).
  • 62% of North Carolina voters say this bill would not personally benefit them, even when reminded that it includes an increase to the Child Tax Credit and would eliminate taxes on tips and overtime.

 

Republicans’ budget bill is unpopular, with opposition growing as voters learn more about it.

  • Before hearing any messaging, over 50% of North Carolina voters are opposed to Republicans’ budget bill.
  • After voters hear a neutral, factual description of the main elements of the bill, net opposition jumps by 13%

Exact Question Language: 

Republican lawmakers in Congress are proposing a tax and spending bill. It would: 

      • Permanently extend all 2017 tax cuts for individuals and corporations, including those for the wealthy
      • Remove taxes on tips and overtime pay, and increase the Child Tax Credit by $500 per child for some families over the next four years
      • Cut over $700 billion from Medicaid and $300 billion from Affordable Care Act subsidies 
      • Cut over $300 billion from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food assistance)
      • Increase military and border security spending by more than $200 billion in total
      • Add nearly $3 trillion dollars to the national debt

  • A majority of North Carolina voters (51%) want their Senators to vote against Republicans’ budget bill.

 

North Carolina voters have a favorable opinion of Medicaid and think the wealthy should pay higher taxes.

  • An overwhelming majority of North Carolina voters have a favorable view of Medicaid (80%) and Medicaid expansion (63%).
  • A majority of North Carolina voters agree that billionaires (80%), the rich (73%), and corporations (71%) should pay more in taxes.

 

Voters oppose extending the 2017 tax cuts, especially when they hear costs will go up for low-income families.

  • A majority of North Carolina voters oppose extending the 2017 tax cuts by a 15 point margin.
  • After voters are given context that costs will go for the poor, opposition skyrockets to a 42 point margin.
