Washington, D.C. – After months of lying about the massive cuts to Medicaid in their Billionaire Tax Scam, some Republican Senators are starting to get nervous now that the bill is approaching a vote and are warning their colleagues about the harm it will bring to their own constituents. Just last night Senator Thom Tillis was handing out flyers to his fellow senators, which detail the extreme coverage and funding losses for states like North Carolina.
Tillis is a bit late to the party in noticing that the bill will devastate his constituents given the House-passed version kicks at least 16 million people off their health insurance, even without the more extreme cuts in the current Senate proposal. But, he’s not alone in sounding the alarm on these devastating Medicaid cuts.
Senate Republicans Admitting the Harm of Medicaid Cuts:
- Senator Thom Tillis: “Medicaid coverage for over 600,000 North Carolinians would be at risk” (Punchbowl)
- Senator Jerry Moran: “it’s bad for Kansas” (Punchbowl)
- Senator Josh Hawley:
- Senator Tommy Tuberville: “[Provider taxes are] the money we use for Medicaid. You start cutting that out, we’ve got big problems.” (AP)
- Senator Jim Justice: “We’re on our way to cannibalizing ourselves. We don’t want to hurt kids and hurt our families.” (AP)
- Sen. Lisa Murkowski: “the House provisions that would ultimately lead to significant cuts in Medicaid are something that won’t work for me and Alaska” (Axios)
Reminder: Most Americans oppose cutting programs like Medicaid to fund tax breaks for the wealthy, including most Trump voters. That’s why many Republicans are worried about the consequences of gutting the program, including Steve Bannon and White House officials. House Republicans are even sending letters to their Senate counterparts warning against the additional cuts in the Senate proposal, despite voting in favor of massive cuts themselves.
