Washington, D.C. [February 25, 2026] — Families Over Billionaires condemned the false economic claims in President Donald Trump’s meandering State of the Union address, saying his speech ignored reality: policies driven by the president and congressional Republicans have made life harder and less affordable for Americans.

Executive Director Kristen Crowell shared the following statement:

“Last night’s address taxed peoples’ tolerance for utter nonsense, as the president relied on inflammatory and grandiose language to distract from the truth. The truth: while billionaires are benefiting from tax handouts and budget cuts, working families are bearing the higher costs. Americans are poorer, sicker, and hungrier because of policies that have raised healthcare costs, slashed critical supports, and pushed essentials further out of reach.”

Background:

The facts show that Donald Trump and congressional Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) overwhelmingly benefits the wealthy, while cuts to Medicaid and refusal to extend ACA premium tax credits is causing millions to lose their health care coverage.

Additionally, Trump administration tariffs are costing the average family roughly two to three times the size of any tax refund they will receive from the OBBBA. 

Such policies are highly unpopular: 

• Recent polling from GBAO, funded by Families Over Billionaires, shows that OBBBA is underwater with likely voters: 52% unfavorable overall and 57% unfavorable among independents.
• Two-thirds rate the economy today as negative, and nearly six-in-10 feel uneasy about their personal financial situation.
• Just 24% of independents approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, and 30% approve of his handling of the presidency overall.
• Under Trump, Americans have lost faith that hard work leads to economic gain. Because the system is rigged against them.

On Monday, Families Over Billionaires and partners heard directly from everyday Americans about their lived realities at our “State(s) of the Union: For the People, Not Billionaires” town hall. Americans from over a dozen states shared firsthand stories of how rising costs and reduced benefits have affected their families’ health, economic stability, and sense of security. Speakers included caregivers, parents, healthcare workers, students, and individuals who have personally experienced coverage loss or declining access to care.
