Washington, D.C. – Yesterday afternoon, Michael Linden, Director of the Families Over Billionaires campaign, joined Julie Mason on SiriusXM to discuss Republicans’ efforts to kick millions off health insurance and take food away from children in need to fund tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. Linden highlighted new polling confirming the strong and bipartisan opposition to their bill and shared more about our new ad campaign to hold Senate Republicans’ feet to the fire as the fight heats up in the Senate.

KEY MOMENTS:
Linden on Congressional Republicans’ Betrayal of Working Families
“What’s so remarkable here is that there are many, many people who voted for Donald Trump who are saying loud and clear, this is not what we voted for. Please don’t do this. Do not cut my health care. Do not cut my kids’ food, school lunch, school meals. And definitely don’t do all that so that the billionaire class can get another tax break.” […] “Politically, it’s a big mistake. I think it’s a huge mistake from a moral and economic standpoint, and I think it’s a big mistake politically. I think a lot of people are going to feel very betrayed by this bill.”
Linden on Localizing the Harms of Republicans’ Tax Bill in New Ad Campaign:
“A state like Alaska is going to be particularly hard hit by the cuts to nutrition assistance programs. A state like North Carolina and South Carolina is going to be particularly hard hit by some of the Medicaid cuts. So we really do want to localize it and make people understand, you know, it’s your neighborhood, it’s your hospital, it’s your neighbors who are going to be affected by this, and it’ll be you. That’s the thing that I think a lot of people don’t realize, when…16 million people lose their health insurance, everybody’s costs go up, and there are millions more people who get their health care through the Affordable Care Act, and their costs are going to go up as early as this fall, if this bill doesn’t get changed. And so there’s real effects here for every single American, and we really do want to make sure that these Senators hear from their own constituents[.]”
Linden on Devastating Impacts of Republicans’ Tax Bill:
“This was really a test of whether or not the Republicans in Washington, DC would meet the moment and respond to their new coalition. [They were] clearly asking for lower costs, a little bit of breathing room, and an economy that was going to work for everyday people, and they have failed that test spectacularly with this bill. Cutting Medicaid, which 70 million Americans rely on, cutting nutrition assistance, raising energy costs all to do an average tax cut to the richest .1% of Americans of something like $250,000 a year.”
